| Costs soar for new death row |

CALIFORNIA - The new death row at San Quentin State Prison is expected to cost nearly 80% more -- and be significantly smaller -- than the blueprint approved by lawmakers five years ago, due to delays and design changes, according to an audit released today. The facility could be filled to capacity within three years of opening unless inmates are housed together, Auditor Elaine M. Howle reported. Construction has not started, due to the Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation's inability so far to persuade lawmakers to fund the projected overruns. Read more.
