| OpEd: Lawsuit proves value of better care |

MICHIGAN - The State of Michigan and the family of Timothy Joe Souders, an inmate who died horribly at a Jackson prison, have tentatively settled a federal lawsuit for $3.25 million. The court must still approve the settlement, but both sides have agreed, and U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman has set a hearing for next week. Most of the $3.25 million will be paid by the state -- in other words, Michigan taxpayers. It should remind everyone, including Gov. Jennifer Granholm, state legislators and the Michigan Department of Corrections, that negligence has human and economic costs. Read more.
