| OpEd: Kandahar break avoidable |

AFGHANISTAN - Today, the Taliban is celebrating its Bastille Day. The dramatic jailbreak at Kandahar's Sarposa Prison -- which freed not some prisoners, but nearly all 1,000 prisoners in the jail -- is a massive strategic blow for the Canadian Forces. And it was totally avoidable. In a single, bold night raid, the Taliban freed nearly 400 of their imprisoned brethren, and certainly won many new recruits among other prisoners made grateful for their unexpected freedom. While 400 Taliban may not sound like much, it dwarfs the 40 enemy detainees (at last count) than the Canadian Forces captured and transferred to Afghan prisons in several years. Lately, the Canadian Forces refuse to update the number of detainees they have caught and transferred, but even if their last number was off by a factor of 10, the bitter reality is this: Literally years of progress rounding up the Taliban in Kandahar were eliminated in a single night.
