Inmate rewarded for preventing disease spread

OTTAWA, CANADA - A man convicted of killing an Ottawa police officer in 1983 will be rewarded today for his efforts to prevent the spread of deadly diseases behind bars. Peter Michael Collins, a 46-year-old inmate at the medium-security Bath Institution near Kingston, is receiving the award from the Canadian HIV/AIDS Legal Network and Human Rights Watch.

The Award for Action on HIV/AIDS and Human Rights recognizes people and organizations that protect the rights and dignity of those living with or affected by HIV and AIDS. Read more.

    I knew Peter, when he was young. Never expected that he could kill anyone. He always cared for people. Something must of snapped because its not him. I was happy to hear about his award because that is the person I new. I haven't spoken to him since late 70's. I have prayed for him many times through the years and will continue. friend in past Beverly
