| COs get batons, spray for escorts |

NOVA SCOTIA, CANADA - Justice Minister Cecil Clarke got another jolt from a cattle prod last week. As a result, it appears correctional officers will now be allowed to carry batons and pepper spray during prisoner escorts. As for Tasers, the minister sensibly decided they will be left on the shelf until a provincial review of stun-gun use is completed. Last week’s order from the Labour Department, instructing the province to arm jail [officers] on escort duty, was certainly a major public relations victory for the [officers'] union. It has been clamouring for such changes for years. The [officers] have been seeking the same level of protection as sheriff’s deputies, who normally escort suspects to and from court appointments.
