| County picks new chief |

OREGON - Yamhill County has hired a Marion County parole and probation administrator to take the reins from Richard Sly when the long-time corrections chief retires at the end of the month. Sgt. Ted Smietana personally delivered his acceptance letter to the Yamhill County Board of Commissioners Monday afternoon. His hire date will be July 21, pending the formalities of a background check. Smietana quickly emerged as a finalist and won high praise from search committee members, including Commissioner Mary Stern, Circuit Court Judge John Collins, corrections department employees and administrators from other departments. Sly was involved in the process, but did not have a formal say. Originally from Baker City, Smietana has worked for the corrections department in Marion County for 26 years.
