An officer at the State Correctional Institute at Greene (Pa.) faces charges for allegedly attempting to bring 50 packets of suspected heroin into the prison. James Clifton Cherry, 32, of Clarksville was arrested March 26 and charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to deliver and possession of contraband, police said. He was arraigned before District Justice Lou Dayich and committed to the Greene County Prison in lieu of $25,000 cash bail. Police said SCI Greene security personnel found the heroin following an investigation into employees bringing drugs in the prison. Cherry, a corrections officer 1, has been employed at the prison since Aril 1999, spokesman Dan Davis said. He has been suspended without pay. He said drugs are smuggled into the prison occasionally. "It's not an ongoing problem," Davis said. Trooper Robert H. Cree, the arresting officer, agreed. "They don't seem to have a lot of problems," Cree said, noting that last incident occurred two years ago and involved a locksmith. Davis said state police handled the investigation and the Department of Corrections was not involved because the drugs did not enter the facility. |
