| UK prison population hits record high |

UNITED KINGDOM - There are now 81,131 people in prisons in England and Wales and a further 64 prisoners being held in police cells as jails in some areas are overcrowded. The rapid increase in the prison population since the beginning of the year has occurred despite Jack Straw, the Justice Secretary, calling on magistrates courts in February to use more community punishments.
