SOUTH DAKOTA - Nine years ago, a 14-year-old girl collapsed during a forced run and died of heat exhaustion after the staff at a girl’s boot camp in Plankinton left her on the ground for three hours during a hot July day. That was then. This is now. Since the death of Gina Score, both the boys’ and girls’ programs have been changed drastically, moving away from military-style programs to focus more intensively on what treatment each juvenile needs. According to Tim Reisch, state Department of Corrections secretary, South Dakota’s juvenile corrections programs are improving as they seek to help youth go straight and avoid a life of crime. They emphasize treatment tailored to each child’s needs, both in state facilities and in the private facilities where some offenders are sent for specialized treatment, he said. Read more.
