Low population shuts Wellington

NEW ZEALAND - Wellington Prison is to be temporarily closed and its inmates moved to other jails. The Corrections Department announced the plan this afternoon, saying there was a "seasonal" dip in the prison population.

"We routinely open and close units when the prison population fluctuates," Assistant Regional Manager Southern Liz Nielsen said. Wellington Prison has around 100 inmates, making it one of the country's smallest jails. Read more.
