OpEd: Costs require solid solutions

MICHIGAN - Michigan taxpayers spend nearly $2 billion a year to keep criminals behind bars, a cost that continues to grow while state revenues stagnate. According to the Citizens Research Council of Michigan, corrections spending is likely to increase to $2.6 billion by 2012 if major changes are not made.

About three in 10 of all state employees work for the Michigan Department of Corrections, and approximately 20 percent of the state's general fund budget goes for corrections. Some might say that is the price we must pay to keep our residents safe. But Michigan's crime rates are comparable to the average for the eight states that border the Great Lakes, despite the fact that Michigan's incarceration rate is about 44 percent higher than the regional average, and 12 percent higher than the national average.
