MAINE - It was no surprise when a National Institute of Corrections consultant issued a report last month that said there were problems with the layout of the aging Washington County Jail. Among the space problems detailed were: a kitchen and laundry that predates a 1988 addition, an inadequate medical examination and interview room, and a multipurpose room that is used to house inmate workers and protective custody inmates. File cabinets are lined up in the hallways and prisoner clothes are locked in a cubbyhole in the exercise room. At the request of the Washington County Sheriff’s Department and through the coordination of the National Institute of Corrections Jail Division in Washington, D.C., consultant James Robertson provided the facility assessment report on the building.
