WASHINGTON, D.C. – The District of Columbia Department of Corrections (DCDOC) has received medical accreditation from the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) and the American Correctional Association (ACA). DCDOC is the first detention system in the United States to receive accreditation using ACA’s 2008 standards. The department, which utilizes private health provider Unity Health Care, achieved 100 percent compliance on ACA’s 41 mandatory standards. It sought and received NCCHC re-accreditation after initially earning the status in 2001. “We now hold dual certifications reflecting that we meet, if not exceed, national correctional standards,” says DCDOC Director Devon Brown. “We are pleased with the stellar performance of Unity Health Care, Inc. and of all the overall dedication of the employees of the Department of Corrections.” This is the first time in the department’s 32-year history that its services have earned both of these certifications. |
