LOUISIANA - Having the highest rate of incarceration in the nation for more than 10 years and one of the highest crime rates, we in Louisiana are shamefully overdue in giving this issue the priority it deserves. This matter especially concerns us in Acadiana since three times as many youths from Lafayette are incarcerated in Baton Rouge than from anywhere else in the state. Though we genuinely have many things to be proud of in Louisiana, too often we rank high where we should be low and rank low on the most basic things - a clean environment; education; community health and mental health; a trained and motivated work force; care for the elderly, disabled and poor; respect for the institution of marriage; and prisoner rehabilitation. There is a direct relationship between these "highs" and "lows," cause and effect. Our security is definitely not just about "locking them up and throwing away the key." Read more.
