ALABAMA - Faced with a $30 million shortfall, the Alabama Department of Corrections has made a reasonable decision to sell 5,000 acres of farmland near Atmore. The department divested itself of 6,000 acres of farmland in other parts of the state to help meet shortages in last year's budget. Meanwhile, putting farmland up for sale should serve as a warning to state legislators that before long, the Corrections Department won't have property to sell or any more places to cut expenses to make ends meet in its already bare-bones operations.
