| Inmates recaptured after they escape from Tenn. jail |

Police captured three Crockett County (Tenn.) Jail escapees Monday, two in Jackson and another near Alamo. William Doop, John Chris Jordan and Robert Kimmons escaped from Crockett County jail late Sunday night. Crockett County Sheriff Troy Klyce said they escaped through a malfunctioned door leading to a recreation area and scaled a 12-ft. razor-wire fence. ''We are trying to determine for sure what happened with the door,'' Kyle said. ''Each time a door opens a light goes off in the jail, so either the light went off and the jailers did not see it, or the door malfunctioned and the light did not come on.'' Police said Doop and Jordan ran three miles southwest of Alamo and stole a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Aire on Johnson Grove Road. They drove the car to Madison County and hitched a ride to Regency Inn in Jackson. While the Madison County Police Department were investigating a bank robbery at Bancorp South on North Highland, the police said they received word that the two inmates were in the hotel. Madison County Police Lt. Rick Holt said Doop and Jordan were spotted within minutes of the bank robbery. The men were arrested at 12:30 p.m. and sent back to Crockett County, while police continued their search for Kimmons. Klyce said a tip to Madison County police helped capture Kimmons at 4:20 p.m. near the intersection of Highway 54 north and Highway 152, just four and a half miles north of Alamo. ''I believe he was trying to hitch a ride or find some place to rob,'' Klyce said. Klyce said overcrowded jails and under staffed personnel could have been the cause of the jail break. |
