INDIANA - The Gary transitional jail will remain open for now, forestalling a flood of inmates some officials feared would overwhelm the Lake County Jail. Gary Police Chief Lawrence Wright said he "jumped the gun" in telling Sheriff Roy Dominguez in a June 5 letter to expect 60 to 80 new inmates per week at the county jail starting this week. "That was my mistake," Wright said Monday. Facing frightening budget shortfalls, the city of Gary hoped to save about $1 million a year by closing its jail.
