NEW ZEALAND - The vicious beating of a Rimutuka prison officer has spurred a call for guards to be armed with tasers. Corrections say the attack was unforseen, but ONE News reveals threats had been made previously. Documents describe how the guard was found lying in a pool of blood after a gang member attacked him with a broom handle. The officer was left with multiple skull fractures and facing possible loss of sight in one eye. Already this year three [COs] have suffered skull fractures in attacks by prisoners; in New Plymouth prison at the start 2008, two months ago in Hawkes Bay, and now Rimutaka. Corrections Association president Beven Hanlon says prison assaults are on the rise and going in with a uniform and bare hands no longer cuts it. Read more.
