Pepper spray discharge forces jail evacuation

The Hamilton County (Ind.) Jail was evacuated Thursday night when pepper spray was discharged inside the jail library.
"It's shown us the planning we've done has worked," said Sheriff Doug Carter.
When the substance discharged, around 7:30 p.m., there were 351 inmates, seven correction officers, six dispatchers and two deputies in the jail.
All of the inmates were evacuated from the jail and placed in other buildings in the jail complex.
There were no injuries, and deputies planned to return the inmates to the jail around midnight.
The substance, called "OC" gas by deputies, is commonly called pepper spray. It traveled into most of the jail through the air handling system.
According to Carter, the discharge was accidental and happened during a training exercise in the library. When the spray traveled into the entire jail, the decision was made to evacuate.
Some off-duty Hamilton County deputies were called to help with the evacuation, as were police from other Hamilton County departments.
Dispatching for the Sheriff's Department was transferred to the Noblesville Police Department.
