| Officials hope minimum security prison is a reality |

MICHIGAN - Increased energy costs have more than doubled the original price estimate for a proposed Rapid City minimum security prison, but lawmakers and prison officials are still optimistic the project will happen. This week, South Dakota Department of Corrections Secretary Tim Reisch said the new prison would cost about $11 million. That's about $7 million more than it took for the state's last prison expansion project. "Our initial estimate was based on the last construction project that we did of a similar nature at Mike Durfee State Prison, when we added 400 beds down there," Reisch said.Read more.
