Two officers at Glades Correctional Institution in Florida have active cases of tuberculosis, a state prison official said Friday, leading authorities to essentially quarantine the inmates there for the weekend. None of the nearly 1,000 inmates at the medium security prison in western Palm Beach County has been confirmed to have the disease, Department of Corrections spokesman Sterling Ivey said. He said all inmates and workers at the prison are being tested by the county's health department. "There will be no movement of inmates [in] or out of the prison," Ivey said. "We're also going to have to cancel visitation for the weekend." Ivey said he didn't know the conditions of the two corrections officers who were diagnosed with TB or whether they were hospitalized. The World Health Organization reports that the level of TB in prisons around the world may be as much as 100 times higher than that of the rest of the population. Tuberculosis in the United States has been on a marked decline for years. A total of 14,871 cases of active TB were reported in 2003, a 1.9 percent drop from the previous year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. |
