| Cuts to corrections unclear |

CALIFORNIA - It was unclear Thursday how many state employees working in San Luis Obispo County would be affected by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s decision to cut tens of thousands of part-time jobs to avoid a looming cash crisis. One thing was certain: Public safety personnel such as CHP officers and Cal Fire medics and firefighters, as well as some health care workers, won’t be affected, according to the governor’s office. Schwarzenegger spokesman Aaron McLear said many local agencies were spending Thursday going through personnel lists to determine which of the state’s 22,000 part-time employees would be immune from the governor’s order. About 10,000 of those employees statewide were expected to receive pink slips. Most of the layoffs would be in administrative areas, including employees who process personnel documents, according to a statement by the governor. The number of employees at other local state offices and agencies — including the Department of Motor Vehicles, Caltrans or Cal Poly — who may have been affected by the governor’s order was not available Thursday. State Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation spokesman Seth Unger also did not have information about how many of the 1,870 employees at California Men’s Colony would be affected by the order.
