MAINE - Members of a newly created board that will oversee spending for Maine's jails are facing legislative confirmation reviews now that they've been nominated by Gov. John Baldacci. The Board of Corrections was created earlier this year by a law aimed at eliminating waste and controlling corrections spending. It will oversee efforts to coordinate purchasing, transportation and bed management between Maine's county jails and the state's prison system. The law was a compromise stemming from Baldacci's original proposal to have the state take over the county jail network. Baldacci's nominees include lawyers, community action, municipal and public representatives. The governor calls his appointees distinguished experts in law and corrections. |
