A jail inmate who beat up a fellow prisoner and stole his sneakers so he would be presentable before a judge was sentenced to 1 to 3 years in state prison. Eric S. Bell, 32, of Worcester, who pleaded guilty in Worcester Superior Court to unarmed robbery and assault and battery charges last Wednesday, told Judge Mary-Lou Rup, "I should have just asked the guy to borrow the sneakers. I don't know why I didn't." Prosecutors said the incident took place on Dec. 11, 2002, when Bell, barefoot, was put into a district court lockup with about 20 other prisoners. Assistant District Attorney Michael J. Ball said Bell demanded the sneakers from George Rice, and when Rice refused, Bell punched Rice in the face and stomach. Other inmates later intervened and got the sneakers back to Rice, Ball said. Bell received credit for 483 days in custody while awaiting trial. |
