NEVADA - The possible closure of the Nevada State Prison in the capital city will be on the table for the Legislature next year if the Department of Corrections must cut 14 percent out of its upcoming 2009-11 budget, a report to the Board of Prison Commissioners says. The closure of the prison, the state’s oldest and one of the oldest in the West, would save $19 million a year but would mean the elimination of 200 jobs. Also on the table for the agency would be the closure of two minimum-security conservation camps in the first year of the budget, saving nearly $3 million a year, and the closure of another two camps in the second year, saving $3.3 million. Which camps would be closed has not been determined. Read more. If link has expired, check the website of the article's original news source. |
