Three D.C. Jail inmates have been indicted on charges of smuggling a gun into the jail and shooting themselves, so they could sue the city. The men were shot December 20th in the jail's maximum-security wing. The indictment issued last Tuesday in D.C. Superior Court contends that the one of them, 32-year-old Shawn Gray, smuggled a handgun into the jail. He allegedly used it to shoot himself and three other inmates, 40-year-old Frederick Robinson, 27-year-old Leonard Johnson and 23-year-old Jamal Jefferson. Robinson and Johnson are also named in the indictment, but Jefferson is not charged in the scheme. Prosecutors say the investigation into his activities is "pending." Prosecutors say the three men named in the indictment planned to sue the D.C. government for not protecting them. Johnson's attorney denies the allegations. He tells The Washington Post that the shootings were an attempted hit. |
