Inmates demanding an end to overcrowding in Ecuadorean prisons freed about 150 of the 340 hostages last Thursday after making an agreement with the government, but one inmate died when fighting broke out among convicts, officials said. Interior Minister Raul Baca said the government agreed to meet with prisoners' representatives this week. Baca also said the government would try to release some inmates nearing the end of their terms to free up prison space and spend $300,000 month on rehabilitation of inmates, Agence France-Presse reported. Ecuador's 34 prisons, built to house 6,000 people, currently hold 12,600 inmates. Since last Tuesday, prisoners at jails in Quito, Guayaquil and Cuenca have held at least 340 people hostage to demand better living conditions and shorter sentences. EFE reported that inmate José Quiñones died in Quito. |
