Garden symbolizes journey

MASSACHUSETTS - In what was once a barren prison yard is now a garden bursting with vibrant flowers, a symbol of the change the inmate gardeners said has blossomed in their lives.

"Gardening shows them that from dirt and dust what beauty comes, and beauty is what they can bring to this world when they leave here," said Bernard Sullivan, director of programs at the Bristol County House of Correction in North Dartmouth.

Linda Pacheco, director of public safety and education, came up with the idea of having eight female detainees from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and eight inmates from the women's prison create a beautiful space for themselves. Read more.
