| Prison school district to train inmates |

SOUTH CAROLINA - Plans are under way to use an unlikely resource to enhance inmates’ educational opportunities at the Tyger River Correctional Institution — other inmates. Inmates who have obtained their general educational development (GED) certificate through prison classes already can become teacher’s aides. Pam Burnett, associate superintendent for the Palmetto Unified School District that operates schools at South Carolina prisons, said the goal is to train inmates with advanced degrees to lead classes and offer individualized tutoring services, which will allow educators to reach more students.
