| CO rejects plea deal |

NEW JERSEY - A Union County corrections officer under investigation for an alleged assault on an inmate at the Elizabeth lockup appeared to have backed away from a plea deal with prosecutors. Alvin White, 34, was expected to admit he punched inmate Edwin Reyes and broke his jaw as part of a plea bargain with prosecutors but there was no deal when he got to the Union County courthouse yesterday afternoon. White showed up with his lawyer Scott Mitzner. Lawyer Robert Norton was there to represent an unnamed corrections officer, who may have witnessed the attack on Reyes. An officer with internal affairs was also present as was the spokesman for the Policemen's Benevolent Association Local 199, George Lord. Prosecutor Theodore Romankow also was present, with the assistant prosecutor trying the case against White, William Kolano. Read more.
