| OpEd: Lawmakers vs. Corrections |

SOUTH CAROLINA - n the current controversy between lawmakers and the Department of Corrections, no one looks good. South Carolinians paying attention to this fight will justifiably be disappointed in their leadership. The problem started with lawmakers. They pass tough-on-crime laws so voters will think they are doing a good job and reward them with re-election. So they crowd the state's prisons with more inmates who serve longer sentences. But these same lawmakers don't want to fund those prisons. That would require them to take money away from their other spending priorities or raise taxes, and they are unwilling to do either. So they leave the state prison system woefully underfunded, even dangerously underfunded. Lawmakers are then upset that Corrections Director Jon Ozmint has the lack of grace to publicly complain about this inadequate budget. Ozmint also is unfortunately linked to his boss, Gov.
