NEW YORK - Broome County legislators voted Wednesday to approve a four-year union contract with its corrections officers. The contract, which covers 2007 to 2010, calls for 3 percent raises in 2007 and 2008 and 4 percent raises in 2009 and 2010. The union’s 150 corrections officers should receive their retroactive pay in September, said Mark Driscoll, union president. Broome County corrections officers start at $31,095. After four years, they make $45,766. A senior grade officer makes $48,553. They can retire at half-pay after 25 years. Union leaders said the increases were reasonable in a tough economy. In contrast, Johnson City firefighters negotiated a 40.1 percent increase in pay over five years, creating a furor among village taxpayers. Read more.
