| Sheriff jails self for better perspective |

ILLINOIS - With correctional officers flanking him on either side, Mark Curran walked away from his freedom down a narrow Lake County Jail corridor Wednesday morning. A loose, jail-issued uniform hung off his body, while a pair of maroon sandals flipped and flopped under his feet as the Lake County sheriff prepared to become his own prisoner. The walk away from the Lake County Jail's booking room was the first step in Curran's self-imposed, week-long sentence. It's a stay he hopes will give him a better connect to inmates and the jail's programs. "I believe that my experience in the jail will help me to better understand our existing programming, as well as any possible unmet needs that exist in our inmate programming," Curran told a crowded room of reporters before beginning the booking process.
