UTAH - A bill passed last year by the Utah legislature requires elected sheriffs to go through several weeks of corrections training before taking office. But on Wednesday, lawmakers on the Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Interim Committee gave their blessing to a bill that reduces that requirement to only 40 hours. The sponsor of last year's bill says he never intended to make the requirement so lengthy, so he wants to clarify the intent of the law. But some lawmakers, including Senator Chris Buttars who used the name of a fellow lawmaker to make his point, think the requirement should be done away with completely.

"I don't think it's needed, I really don't. I just think, once again, we didn't make Carl Wimmer go through 60 hours of training before he ran for election where he's dealing with big issues," said Buttars. "I just think we're trying to get too down to time and motion, you got to do it this way and that way or you can't do this job. I don't like that." Read more.
