Homeowner kills escaped inmate

A Cascade, Mont., homeowner shot and killed an escaped inmate from the Cascade County regional jail who was in the house last Monday evening.
Paul Anthony Anderson, 26, who was serving 10 years on a Missoula robbery involving a weapon, was shot once in the chest with a handgun and died before deputies and medical personnel arrived.
He and James Joseph Brown, 41, were low-security state inmates and walked away from the regional jail last Sunday night around 9 p.m. as they washed windows in the jail lobby.
Sheriff Kent Funyak notified the public of the escapes the following morning.
No one has been arrested or charged in the shooting. Funyak said officers were investigating the scene last Monday night and would need to interview the homeowners again this morning before releasing details of the shooting.
However, neighbors said the convict broke into the house and was shot.
Officers were called to 186 Old Ulm-Cascade Frontage Road at 5:42 p.m. last Monday.
Funyak said the homeowners, Rob and Sandy Nylund, were home when Anderson entered the home. The Nylunds' gray ranch-style home is in open farmland about a half mile west of Interstate 15 roughly half way between the communities of Ulm and Cascade south of Great Falls.
Funyak couldn't say how Anderson got in the home, but that the inmate didn't know the Nylunds. Anderson didn't have a weapon on him.
Based on the initial investigation, Brown wasn't at the residence and wasn't involved in the crime.
The two inmates were classified as low security by the state Department of Corrections and were allowed to work outside of their cells, shoveling snow from the sidewalks, mowing lawns and other work.
