The Tennessee Department of Correction selected architecture, engineering, planning, and interiors firm DLR Group to design a new $145 million facility on a 75-acre site in southeast Tennessee. The building will be adjacent to the TNDOC’s existing Southeast Regional Correctional Facility. "DLR Group is poised to meet the state’s mission to build an economical facility,” said DLR Group principal Tim Gibson, AIA. “The design of the facility recognizes and addresses the needs of both the inmate population and staff to create an efficient and safe corrections environment.” The new facility, which will help the state meet a projected need for 2,500 beds by 2015, will have 1,444 new beds and the ability to add additional medium security beds. Construction is to begin in summer 2009 and continue for two years. Building the new facility will make it possible for Tennessee to upgrade regional water and electrical systems. Officials also think it will create more jobs for Bledsoe County, and reduce operational costs because of its close proximity to an existing facility. |
