Another jail inmate has died in Essex County, N.J.. The death of Harold Hardy, 55, last Friday was the third in the county's correctional system in the last two weeks. Hardy had a history of heart problems, but jail officials said he was taking medication. Deaths among inmates are rising in the county. There were 13 last year, more than three times the average of the years before 2003. The county recently opened a new jail that cost more than $400 million, and is said to have better security and medical facilities. Some say it's beset with problems like leaking pipes and toilets. Prison officials say a big problem is the absentee rate of corrections officers, which is running about 15 to 20 percent. |
