Jail would evacuate if Gustav threatens

LOUISIANA - If forced to evacuate by the path of Hurricane Gustav, the Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff's office will move all of the inmates out of local jails in advance of the state implementing "contraflow" on the Interstate highways, Sheriff Marlin Gusman said Thursday.

Although Gusman said he could not say when the sheriff would begin moving the first of the 2,500 inmates out of his facilities, he said any evacuation would have to be completed before 30 hours ahead of landfall, which is the point at which the state begins contraflow procedures. Read more.
