After injuring a corrections officer and then using chairs in attempt to batter open an exit doorway, two inmates failed in their attempt to escape from the Salem County (N.J.) Correctional Facility, authorities said. Authorities Tuesday gave details of the jail-break attempt which occurred Friday evening. At approximately 8 p.m., Kenneth L. Williams, 38, a Pennsylvania federal inmate, and Shawn D. Strader, 22, of Pennsville, attempted to break out of the facility by overtaking and locking a correctional officer in a cell of the Behavior Modification Unit, which is classified as maximum security, according to Sheriff John B. Cooksey. They then attempted to use a set of chairs as a battering ram in order to force open the rear door of the recreation yard. As a result, an alarm sounded in the central control room of the jail where officers responded to the unit and took control of the inmates. The inmates were confined to the Disciplinary Unit and formally charged with assault on a law enforcement officer and attempted escape by the New Jersey State Police, who conducted an investigation. Bail for each in the jail-break attempt was set at $150,000. Williams was being held in the Salem County Correctional Facility waiting trial on robbery charges and Strader was being held pending sentencing on arson charges. The unidentified correctional officer sustained bruises, contusions of the arm and a sprained hand and back. Since the incident, the correctional facility's officials have removed chairs from the units and are currently reviewing additional safety precaution procedures to prevent possible similar future incidents from occurring. Cooksey said in the past minor incidents in the correctional facility have occurred, but "nothing like this." He added that even if the inmates made it through the rear door, they would have entered the outer perimeter which is secured by a large chain linked fence with razor wire. Security guards periodically patrol the outside perimeter as well. |
