ARIZONA - Harvard University's Ash Institute for Democratic Governance has recognized the Arizona Department of Corrections for an innovative program that prepares inmates for their return to society by modeling the prison setting after the real world. The institute, part of the Kennedy School of Government, gave its Innovations in American Government Award to the Corrections Department during a gala Tuesday night in Washington, D.C., where Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano spoke of the need for innovation in government. In a statement, Napolitano said the Getting Ready: Keeping Communities Safe program "is a great example of the many creative approaches we're taking to policy issues in Arizona, and it represents what innovation can mean for the public and taxpayers."
