GEORGIA - Law enforcement officials say they’re concerned by a Georgia Department of Corrections proposal to limit and realign specialized K-9 units they use to hunt and track criminals. The proposal is one of several in the works to trim the Corrections Department’s budget after Gov. Sonny Perdue mandated all state agencies cut their budgets by at least 6 percent to make up for an anticipated $1.6 billion state budget shortfall.

Joan Heath, the department’s director of public affairs, said Wednesday that the “realignment” of the special operations units is one way to adhere to Perdue’s edict.

“Let me stress that the units are not completely going away,” Heath said. “We will be moving the units around to facilities across the state and the wardens of those facilities will make the determination when to send them out.” Read more.
