Death natural, jury finds

CANADA - A coroner's jury determined yesterday a St. Thomas man died of natural causes while in Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre last year. Gary Michael Coolen, 49, died of complications from the end stage of liver disease, a jury of four men and a woman decided after an inquest in London.

The jury took less than half an hour to render a decision after listening to about two hours of testimony from two doctors, a nurse, a corrections officer and directions from coroner Rick Mann. Mann, inquest counsel Gary Fowler and Carol Ann Witt, lawyer for the provincial corrections ministry, all told the jury the medical testimony pointed directly to a natural cause of death. Read more.
