Male and female inmates face charges after 'escape'

Prosecutors filed criminal charges Thursday against four male inmates accused of sneaking into the female section of the Hamilton County (Ind.) Jail last month -- and the women suspected of helping them.
"The prosecutor's office wants to assist the sheriff in maintaining discipline to make sure those who commit crimes (in) the jail are held accountable for their actions," said Jeffrey Wehmueller, administrative chief deputy at the Hamilton County Prosecutor's office.
According to prosecutors, Barry Blackwell, 21, of Lebanon, and Kevin Daniels, 39, Michael Scott, 22, and William Huynh, 22, all of Indianapolis, face felony escape and residential entry charges and misdemeanor criminal mischief.
The women who authorities say were involved -- Tiffany S. Cooksey, 19, Noblesville; April M. Bradley, 23, Monticello, Ky.; and Jessica L. Nelson, 18, Indianapolis -- each face a misdemeanor charge of assisting a criminal.
Initial hearings in the cases will be scheduled sometime in the next two weeks, Wehmueller said.
Officials say the men knocked out a panel in a jail wall, and climbed through a small hole to enter the utility area March 24.
They broke through a trap door to get into the female block. Showers are in the utility area, so no cameras monitor it, a spokesman for the Sheriff's Department said after the incident.
The men were in the women's block from one to two hours, Wehmueller said.
According to a probable cause affidavit, while in the female cell block, the men had sexual relations with some female inmates, Wehmueller said.
Such incidents at the jail are unusual, he said.
