Candy cut from juvenile inmates' diets

ARIZONA - Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio announced Tuesday that he's ending the sale of candy, cookies, and other sugary treats at juvenile jails, according to a sheriff's office new release. The treats were sold at the jail canteen in addition to the 17 cent meals served in the Maricopa County Jails.

Sheriff Arpaio says the items are being removed from the inmates' canteen list in attempt to improve the health of the 200 male and female juvenile who are in adult custody. Teenage inmates reportedly spend on average about $1,000 a week on candy, according to the news release. Read more.
