Officers and sheriffs get pay hike

CANADA - The B.C. government has given a temporary pay hike of nearly 10 per cent to its corrections officers and sheriffs in an effort to get and keep more of them on the job. The people who provide security in jails and courthouses have been retiring and leaving for other jobs in large numbers.

In July the sheriff shortage led a judge in Richmond to cancel an impaired driving trial. Attorney General Wally Oppal said there was an RCMP officer available to secure the courthouse, but the B.C. Government and Service Employees Union objected to police doing union work. Read more.
