Lee County inmates end hunger strike

Some inmates at the Tupelo-Lee County (Miss.) jail have ended a weekend hunger strike.
The 20 to 30 inmates, who had spent about 30 hours protesting a rule change, all ate lunch Sunday, said Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson.
"No rules were changed," Johnson said. "They decided not to eat on their own, and they decided to eat on their own."
Inmates were protesting a change in time they were allowed to return to bed in the afternoon. Administrators had moved the time from noon to 3 p.m. to avoid having some inmates sleep during the day and stay awake all night, disturbing those who had been on work details. All inmates rise at 5 a.m.
No violence accompanied the hunger strike, Johnson said. The inmates simply declined food when served, he said.
