FLORIDA - A candy-loving corrections deputy was fired in July for accepting Jolly Rancher bribes from inmates in exchange for withholding discipline. According to an Internal Affairs investigation prepared by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Lee County Jail corrections deputy Jonathan Smith was terminated from his post on allegations of neglect of duty, unlawful conduct and untruthfulness. The report indicates two inmates — David Moise and Sean Kesler — were allowed to get out of certain punishments by offering Smith Jolly Rancher candies, which they ordered from the canteen. The allegations weren’t revealed until June, when Smith reportedly refused to make a deal with Moise, who then became angry and made a complaint. Read more.
