NEW ZEALAND - Half of all prison inmates are now engaged in some form of employment or training, Corrections Minister Phil Goff said. He said that since the Government launched the Prisoner Employment Strategy just over two years ago, the number of inmates in work or training had increased by nearly 1000. The prison population was around 8,000. "Last year prisoners also gained 37,563 New Zealand Qualifications Authority credits, up from 20,350 the previous year – a growth of 85 per cent," he said.
