Jail gets 30-day variance

NEW YORK - The Herkimer County requested yet another 90-day variance from the State Commission of Corrections to keep its correctional facility open. At a meeting Tuesday the commission decided to reduce it to a 30-day variance, according to John Caher, director of public information.

“We certainly recognize the financial and logistical problems. But the status quo is just not acceptable,” he said in a phone interview. The commission will decide at its next meeting whether or not to extend the variance for a ninth time since it issuance in August 2006. Herkimer County Sheriff Christopher Farber said, “We will immediately turn around and request another variance; hopefully they’ll give us another.” Read more.
