MASSACHUSETTS - Inmates' gang affiliations present special headaches for corrections officials, who say that bulging prison populations can sometimes make it difficult to separate inmates who might escalate their street rivalries behind bars. "Issues on the street carry over in here," said Julio J. DeFigueiredo, an internal affairs investigator for the Bristol County Sheriff's Office. "It happens in all facilities. It doesn't matter what county you are." The case of nine inmates who allegedly assaulted a rival gang member at the Dartmouth House of Corrections in June highlights the overcrowding and gang problems plaguing prisons, corrections officials say.
